Paul will host 115 kindergarten through fourth-graders and 45 KIPP Board members and staffers to enjoy a fun-filled evening of basketball in his former arena. Paul is excited to see “his” kids from the CP3 Afterschool Zone program. Launched in 2010 by Partnership for Youth Development, the Afterschool Zone is a tailored multi-year program for K-4th grade students from the KIPP Central City Primary School, providing personalized afterschool experiences from sports and cooking to language lessons, homework help and more.

Based on his personal childhood experiences enjoying basketball and a variety of afterschool activities, Paul knows that pairing education with quality afterschool offerings will be highly impactful on children’s early development. Developing the program with KIPP Central City Primary and Partnership for Youth Development, Paul wanted the youngsters in Central City to experience those same opportunities that made an impact on who he is today. Since launching the CP3 Afterschool Zone, seeing “his” kids’ ongoing progress and development continues to be one of his biggest thrills.

Says Paul, “I’m looking forward to being back in New Orleans, checking on the students and staff to see how things are progressing. I’m proud of the Afterschool Zone program and want to congratulate the staff on their continued support.”

“Partnership for Youth Development and KIPP Central City have such deep gratitude for Chris’ ongoing support of this program. It is so wonderful for our KIPPsters to maintain this meaningful connection,” stated PYD Executive Director, Dr. Lauren Bierbaum.

A three-time recipient of the NBA Community Assist Award for his charitable efforts, the Clippers point guard remains dedicated to scholarship, health and social initiatives with the CP3 Foundation across the country. His community service and support includes The Nathaniel Jones Scholarship Fund in Winston-Salem, in honor of his late grandfather; and organizations including The Boys & Girls Club, Feed the Children, Special Olympics, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and LA’s Best. These initiatives all benefit from the CP3 Foundation’s passion for service and giving.

About Chris Paul & the CP3 Foundation

Chris Paul, point guard for the Los Angeles Clippers, has proven himself time and again both on and off the court. An All-American at Wake Forest University, he was selected fourth overall in the 2005 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Hornets and earned Rookie of the Year honors, receiving 124 of the 125 first place votes. Paul earned a Bronze medal at the 2006 World Championships in Japan and Gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics as part of Team USA, and has been recognized by People Magazine in their “50 Most Beautiful” issue in 2006 and by GQ with “Men of the Year” honors in 2008. In 2010, Paul was appointed as a member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, which encourages all Americans to adopt a healthy lifestyle. In 2005, Chris Paul established the CP3 Foundation, in partnership with the Winston-Salem Foundation in honor of his late grandfather, Nathaniel Jones, and the Winston-Salem community, both of whom nurtured him and helped him to become the man that he is today. Enriching local communities, programs include the Nathaniel Jones Scholarship Fund, donating food and other needs to underserved communities, refurbishment of basketball courts, and more. In October 2010, the CP3 Foundation and Chase Bank created The CP3 Afterschool Zone presented by Chase to benefit the children of New Orleans. Paul’s emphasis on community involvement has made him a three-time recipient of the NBA’s Community Assist Award.

From President Obama to countless mayors and superintendents, more policymakers and educators are considering ways to lengthen the school day than ever before. Here in Louisiana, this year’s 21st Century Community Learning Center Request for Proposals allows applicants to offer before- and after-school programming or expanded learning time.

Partnership for Youth Development (PYD) supports a national, multi-year expanded learning time effort called ExpandED Schools. ExpandED Schools bring together schools and community-based organizations to create a longer learning day with more opportunities for students. These schools offer both increased time for academics and the best of after-school programming, including enrichment, social supports, physical activity, and healthy snacks. There are three ExpandED Schools in Louisiana supported by PYD and our national partner, TASC.

If you are interested in learning more about ExpandED Schools and other ELT models, through community partnerships, the following resources may be of interest to you.

Expanding the Learning Day Through Partnerships: Three Schedules: This brief outlines how three school/community partnerships across the country structure a longer day that includes more opportunities for enrichment, physical activity, the arts, and more.

School Faculty Reinvented: This video shows how one school works with their community partner to co-teach social studies through the arts in an expanded day.

ELT Readiness Tool: This planning tool can support school/community organization teams to identify strengths and areas in need of attention in planning an expanded learning day together.

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The Collaborative for Building After-School Systems (CBASS), the country’s premier affinity organization for intermediary agencies, recently announced the addition of Partnership for Youth Development to its national coalition. PYD began working with CBASS shortly after the storms and levee breaks of 2005 by organizing and hosting a local conference of national afterschool and summer learning experts dedicated to supporting the rebuilding of New Orleans children and youth serving community.

Having been the beneficiary of CBASS’s unique expertise during such a critical time of growth and decision-making in the New Orleans community, PYD is gratified to have progressed to the point of joining the CBASS partners as a peer organization and looks forward to providing New Orleans voice to this important national discussion.

“PYD’s inclusion in CBASS represents a proud moment for our organization and a strong recognition of how innovative the New Orleans community has become in the ways we address the needs of our city’s young people. PYD’s invitation to join CBASS provides one more example that our work in New Orleans will reverberate on a national stage,” said Dr. Lauren Bierbaum, PYD’s Executive Director.

PYD and the three other new CBASS members (Hartford (CT) Partnership for Student Success; Youthprise (Twin Cities, MN), and Nashville (TN) After Zone Alliance) will help CBASS expand its national reach and expertise. CBASS members will next convene in Washington DC for a series of visits to federal elected officials, in support of sustaining education and out-of-school time policies.

Richard was a leader, a role model, a mentor, and a friend to all of us working in youth development. One of the original designers of the Harlem Children’s Zone, Richard worked in both the public and private sectors in New York City. In New York, Richard created perhaps the most robust model for public-private partnership in the youth-serving sector ever seen in the U.S. A tireless innovator, Richard also founded iMap America, the program that helped us at PYD develop our NOLA Youth Map. Richard’s work had national reach, as those of us who had the honor of working with him have carried what he taught us to Louisiana, to Wisconsin, to California, to Minnesota, and beyond. Richard’s generosity, expertise, and incredible passion for social justice were inimitable. He is, and will continue to be, deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, Richard requested that those wishing to honor his memory do so by making a donation to Mind Builders Creative Arts Centers.

Thank you for your continued support and generosity to Partnership for Youth Development and please consider donating here on our website, nolayouth.org/get-involved/donate/.

While the New Orleans educational community has made many strides, educational equity and opportunity will be the driving force behind reducing future crime rates, enhancing economic development, and preparing our youth to compete in a 21st century global workforce. New Orleans youth are the future of this community and, with your help, will continue to receive the educational and supportive services they require to develop into future leaders.

As we near the holidays and a time of reflection, I ask you to take a moment to consider how enriching educational experiences from your own childhood shaped who you are today. What mentors inspired you to set and reach your goals? What favorite activities did you participate in after school and during summer that opened your eyes to new interests? What moments during your youth inspired you to overcome any obstacle in your path?

I hope that you will play an active role in sustaining the work of Partnership for Youth Development in 2013. Your donation, no matter the size, makes a significant difference and will help our overarching mission to create opportunities for high quality learning opportunities for New Orleans students.

Warm regards and happy holidays,
Lauren J. Bierbaum

We said farewell to fearless leaders moving on to next steps, and welcomed new partners joining us in the work of creating equity for the children of Louisiana. We celebrated the positive changes we’ve seen in the landscape and redoubled our efforts to ensure that those positive changes sustain. Through it all, our commitment to our communities, our city, and our state never wavers, because our work isn’t just about supporting our communities. It’s also about how our communities support us. We work for strong communities, strong programs, and strong schools not only because our children deserve the very best, but also because every single one of us – our entire community – benefits when our children have greater opportunities to achieve their dreams. As 2012 comes to a close, I thank you all for your dedication. I have only one wish for 2013: that in the coming year, we stand as strong in our diversity and as committed to social justice as we did in 2012. Happy holidays to you all! – Lauren

Chess has transformed the school from one cited in 2003 as a “school in need of improvement” to one of New York City’s best. This film illuminates the power of such programs and the impact they can have on the lives of young people.
